| | Strait-Highlands RDA is assisting the Town of Port Hawkesbury in the development of a Community Economic Development Plan that is intended to result in prioritized Town projects such as façade and streetscape upgrades (among others).
A community-focused, and community owned plan is the common goal of all of the partners involved. A steering committee has been formed, comprised of individuals from Town Council, municipal staff, S-HRDA, the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, Nova Scotia Economic and Rural Development, Eastern District Planning Commission, and community representatives.
Gaining an understanding of what the Town currently looks like is the initial research piece. The project is undertaking a community profiling and asset mapping exercise. A draft profile has been created that provides a statistical overview of the Town in terms of demographics and trends. The asset mapping component is also underway, providing an inventory of community attributes, both physical and intangible. Collectively, this information will provide a foundation upon which a realistic vision for the Town can be created - helping us to better understand our strengths and weaknesses as a community. The view of the Steering Committee is that public input is key to ensuring that a realistic vision is created that is in the best interests of both the general community and business community within the Town.
The Town of Port Hawkesbury is a community of great potential and resilience. The Steering Committee is excited to be moving this project forward with strong participation and input from community members and volunteer groups.
