|  |  Imagine2030 – what will our community look like in the future? The short answer - it will be what we make it. In an effort to shape a positive future for the region’s commercial and service centre, Strait-Highlands RDA is assisting the Town of Port Hawkesbury in creating a Community Economic Development Plan for the Town.
First, we started creating a Community Profile and mapping assets. Gaining an understanding of how the Town currently looks is the initial research piece. But, what is a Community Profile? We have started to assemble a statistical overview of the Town in terms of demographics and trends. We have also started listing and mapping our Town’s assets which has resulted in an inventory of physical and intangible community attributes, from trails to social networks. Collectively, this information will provide a foundation upon which a realistic vision for the Town can be created.
Next, we are starting consultations (let’s talk about this!) The initial group of partners advancing this project includes the Town, Strait-Highlands RDA, the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce, Eastern District Planning Commission, funding partners, and community members. These partners have formed a project Steering Committee with the view that public input is critical. We are committed to ensuring that Imagine2030 results in a community vision that reflects the strengths and desires of people living and doing business in the Town.
Where are we going with this? Our focus now is on getting the discussion started - gathering ideas and thoughts from the public, challenging assumptions and discovering opportunities. This information will be crafted into a strategic document that prioritizes specific actions related to community economic development within the Town; a plan that is truly “owned” by those who contribute to it – residents, businesses, and community groups.
Expect to see more about Imagine2030. This is the first in a series of articles that will present information about the Town’s population, education levels, labour force, and quality of life. The consistent challenge and message through all of these articles will be centred on building a vision – what WILL our community look like in the future? It’s up to you!
So, think about it – what are some of the things you have always thought would be a positive addition to the Town of Port Hawkesbury? Is it a park? Is it a theatre? A new business, medical centre, or a particular heritage site?
