Regional Immigration Navigator

The Regional Immigration Navigator project is a partnership between the Strait-Highlands Regional Development Agency, the Antigonish Regional Development Authority, and the Guysborough County Regional Development Authority and is supported by both provincial and federal levels of government.

The goal of this project is to provide a central location where both newcomers and stakeholders in the region can obtain information related to immigration and settlement needs. The project provides an opportunity to build capacity and understanding within supporting agencies, community groups, employers and stakeholders, as well as an opportunity to provide assistance in identifying programs, potential employees and form partnerships on immigration related subjects. Overall this position will help to simplify the process for newcomers and stakeholders.

The main duties of the Immigration Navigator are to:
  • Guide immigrants in their search for settlement and integration services in the region.
  • Provide an opportunity to build capacity and understanding within supporting agencies, employers and stakeholders by acting a liaison and providing facilitation for currently available programs extended to our region (for example: MISA-New Beginnings Online, YMCA Cultural Competency Program, NSOOI- Roundtable Sessions).
  • Provide guidance to newcomers on the best program or service to use when considering moving to the region, where to go to obtain information and refer individuals onto the appropriate agency.
  • Work with newcomers seeking employment by referring them onto businesses that have identified a need for skilled workers, provide reference to appropriate employment agencies and provide information on the process for applying for work in Canada.
  • Support employers and organizations who have already voiced a need to address newcomer issue to identify programs, potential employees and form partnerships on immigration related subjects.
  • Act as a referral service to the partnering Regional Development Authorities for the Community Identified Stream of the Provincial Nominee Program and will work to provide information on additional streams of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program to a wider audience.
  • Identify service needs, partnerships and funding opportunities to maintain/enhance a local immigration presence in Eastern Nova Scotia.
Overall this position will help to ‘put a face’ on immigration in the Antigonish/Strait-Highlands region, simplifying the process for newcomers and increasing understanding of newcomer issues for stakeholders, employers and the community at large.
