| | The Strait-Highlands Regional Development Agency (S-HRDA) congratulates the Lemoine Development Association, the Grand Étang Harbour Authority and SuGen Research on their recent approval from the province to continue progress with the 3.5 kilowatt vertical axis wind turbine in Grand Étang, Inverness County.
The small scale wind project will go forward as a Community Feed-in Tariff Program (COMFIT) project. It will proceed with a solid source of revenue from Nova Scotia Power Inc. (.49˘/kWh) for the investment owners which include Lemoine Development Association, the Harbour Authority of Grand Étang and SuGen Research Inc.. The COMFIT Program began in August 2011 under the direction of the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, and is an opportunity for power producers to receive a competitive price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for electricity produced from qualifying renewable resource projects. COMFIT is intended to encourage and support the development of renewable electricity projects by community- based groups such as municipalities, First Nations, co-operatives and not-for-profit groups.
“The COMFIT rate for small wind projects less than 50 kilowatts such as the vertical axis system is excellent compared to the rate for larger projects at just over 13˘/kWh”, notes John Beaton, Energy and Sustainability Consultant to the S-HRDA. Beaton added, “It’s very encouraging to see one of SuGen’s innovative systems connected and working toward our targets for renewables."
Heather Davis from SuGen Research notes, "This project exemplifies the ‘community’ in ComFit. Though the smallest project in ComFit, it will allow LeMoine Development to have a stable source of income for community development for 20 years using an abundant local natural resource. SuGen Research is proud to be working with both Lemoine Development and the Grand Étang Harbour Authority on this project."
